Guest Lecture on Migratory Birds for Grades VIII and XI

On February 11, 2014, a Guest Lecture was conducted for the students of Grades VIII and XI as a part of the ISA British Council Project on "Fancy Fliers" — Migratory Birds. Mr. B. Ramalingam, DFO, Curator of the Indira Gandhi Zoological Park, Visakhapatnam and an expert in Migratory Birds, was the Guest Speaker.

With the help of a PPT Presentation, he explained some interesting facts about the birds and the diversity of their species in the world and in our country. He discussed in detail the migratory patterns of the birds based on their breeding and wintering grounds during autumn and spring seasons around the world. The students were excited to identify some of the birds he showed in the presentation that they observe around their school campus each morning.

They had an interactive session with Mr. Ramalingam who patiently answered all their queries related to the topic. Mr. Ramalingam emphasized on the migration of 40,000 kms twice a year by Arctic Tern, the longest ever migration in the animal kingdom with the help of maps, pictures, and other data. A field trip would be arranged to Telineelapuram near Srikakulam to observe about 2000 migratory birds visiting these wetlands as an extension of this learning process.
