Activity on Characteristics of Materials

Children of Grade 1 were taken to the Chemistry Lab to understand the characteristics of different materials. The teacher displayed different kinds of materials like wood, plastic, steel, fabric, cotton, glass, stone, copper sulphate, magnet, potassium permanganate etc. Children were encouraged to observe carefully and investigate the materials.

They were asked to identify materials with properties like smooth (table), rough (pumice stone), soft (cotton), shiny (copper sulphate), grainy (potassium), transparent (glass, beaker), floats (wood), attracts (magnet) etc. They understood that different materials have different properties.
