Boarders of Oakridge International School have visited the fort
on 24-03-2013 as a part of an educational trip. The fort was built by the
Gajapati Rajahs and it was the administrative capital of Gajapati kingdom. The
city was then formed and spread around the fort and was named (Vizianagaram)
after Pusapati Peda Vijaya Rama Gajapati Raju (1670 - 1756), who was one of the
most prominent kings of Gajapati dynasty. The ancestors of Gajapati rajahs
belong to Udaipur (formerly Mewar Kingdom) of Rajasthan.
The Vizianagaram fort
was built during 1712 - 1714 AD and the inauguration stone of the fort was laid
on Vijaya Dasami (tenth day of Dasara festival) in the Telugu year of Vijaya.
Today, the fort was turned into a web of many educational institutions and
thanks to the wonderful contributions of Maharajas of Vizianagaram for the
welfare of poor and needy. The trip turned out to be very informative and
students came to know the importance of fort and its administrative
system.
